Science and Technology Events Canceled One After Another... "Joining in Mourning"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] Following the large-scale crush accident that occurred on the 29th in Itaewon, Seoul, the science and technology community has also been canceling events one after another and entering a period of mourning.
The Korea Institute of Science and Technology Development (KIRD) announced on the 1st that it will completely cancel the '2022 Science and Technology Future Talent Roadshow,' which was scheduled to be held from the 3rd. Instead, KIRD decided to join the national mourning period, which lasts until the 5th. This roadshow was planned as an interactive talk concert where scientists and famous science YouTubers would form teams to discuss the future changes brought by science and technology and ways to respond. Park Gwi-chan, director of KIRD, stated, "We pray for the repose of the victims who lost their lives in this tragic accident and for the speedy recovery of the injured."
The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) also canceled or postponed some of the '2022 GIST Science Culture Week' events scheduled to be held from the previous day until the 11th of this month. Several programs such as student festivals, cultural events, and movie days were postponed or canceled, while some programs related to startups and education will proceed as planned.

GIST stated, "During the national mourning period, we will fly flags at half-mast on campus and all faculty and staff will wear black ribbons to express condolences for the victims," adding, "We will strive to ensure that the educational and research activities of our members proceed calmly in the atmosphere of mourning."
