Suncheon City Cancels the 23rd Suncheonman Reed Festival... Let's Share the Sorrow
Cancellation of Suncheonman Reed Festival Scheduled for November 4 Due to Large-Scale Disaster at Itaewon Halloween Event
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced on the 31st that it has decided to cancel the 23rd Suncheonman Reed Festival scheduled for November 4th to mourn the victims of the Itaewon tragedy.
The city had planned to hold the Suncheonman Reed Festival for three days from November 4th to 6th at the Suncheonman Wetland and nearby areas, but decided to cancel it considering the nationwide mourning atmosphere and the gravity of the situation caused by the recent tragedy.
This year's Reed Festival had various performances prepared, including the Yongjul Tug-of-War in Daedae Village, Dosadong, the Bumper Harvest Festival in Waon Village, Haeryong-myeon, a choir performance by students of Inan Elementary School, and an opening performance by soprano Cha Yu-kyung.
A Suncheon City official said, "Since the entire nation is mourning the victims and the government has designated a national mourning period until November 5th, we decided to cancel the Suncheonman Reed Festival to share the sorrow of this tragic accident. We will take the participation and solidarity of local residents built up while preparing for this festival as an experience and prepare a better Reed Festival next year."
