Exhibition of Major Permanent Exhibition Artifacts from the Hansen's Disease Museum at National Sorokdo Hospital
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Suncheon National University (President Ko Young-jin) Museum announced that it will hold the Jeonnam Eastern Region Cooperative Museum Traveling Exhibition "Life, Education, and Human Rights of Sorokdo" from the 31st of this month to November 27th.
The traveling exhibition is part of the 2022 National University Promotion Project and was co-planned with the Jeonnam Eastern Region Cooperative Museums, including the National Sorokdo Hospital Hansen's Disease Museum (hereafter Sorokdo Museum) and Goheung Buncheong Culture Museum.
Following the first exhibition held at the Goheung Buncheong Museum in September, the second exhibition will be held at the Suncheon National University Museum from October 31st to November 27th.
Prepared as the first joint event of the three museums, this exhibition will display major permanent exhibition artifacts, including 21 items from 3 nationally registered cultural properties owned by the Sorokdo Museum.
The artifacts were left by people who were forcibly isolated on the island after the establishment of the Jahye Clinic on Sorokdo in 1916, and this traveling exhibition marks the first time these items have been displayed outside Sorokdo.
Focusing on the lives, education, and human rights of Hansen's disease patients on Sorokdo in Goheung, the exhibition showcases personal belongings they used, relics from the Noksan Medical Training Institute, petitions and statements related to the April 6 Incident, among others.
Suncheon National University President Ko Young-jin said, "I hope that the steadfast lives of the Sorokdo people, despite difficult circumstances, will serve as a source of courage and strength for local citizens and students. We will continue to collaborate with institutions to present diverse cultural and artistic content to the public."
