[Asia Economy Reporters Hyunju Lee and Hyunji Kwon] Jeong Woo-taek, a member of the People Power Party, was elected as the ruling party's Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly for the second half of the 21st National Assembly on the 25th.
Jeong, a five-term lawmaker, won the election by 49 votes, narrowly defeating Seo Byung-soo (also a five-term lawmaker) by a margin of 2 votes after a runoff vote during the party members' meeting held to select the Deputy Speaker.
Before the vote, Jeong emphasized his party career. In his policy speech, he stated, "I am the only floor leader who has negotiated with the Democratic Party," and added, "I also have a strong attachment from serving as floor leader when the party was struggling right after the impeachment, protecting our party's banner."
Jeong, who passed the civil service exam and began his legislative career as a member of the 15th National Assembly, has served as Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, Governor of Chungcheongbuk-do, and floor leader of the Saenuri Party. He said, "With the political sense gained from serving as minister, governor, and floor leader, I will do my utmost, even with all my might, to ensure the National Assembly operates with common sense."
