Iran Authorities Indict Over 500 Protesters in 'Hijab Suspicious Death' Cases
Sent to Trial This Week
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on the 24th (local time) that hundreds of participants in the anti-government protests triggered by the 'hijab suspicious death incident' in Iran have been indicted by the prosecution.
Iranian judicial authorities announced that 516 people, including 315 arrested in Tehran, who played leading roles in protests across Iran, will face trial starting this week.
The Iranian government, which has claimed that foreign anti-government forces such as the United States and Israel are behind the protests, is expected to accuse the indicted protesters of collaborating with foreign governments, WSJ reported.
According to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency, in addition to those on trial for participating in the protests, 10 protesters have been arrested on charges of collaborating with Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency.
In Iran, protests have continued for five weeks following the suspicious death of a 22-year-old woman who was arrested and investigated for not properly wearing a hijab on the 13th of last month.
International criticism has intensified as the crackdown has been further strengthened, including a suspicious fire incident in a prison where hundreds of protesters arrested during the protests were detained, and indiscriminate use of firearms.
