UK Ministry of Defence: "Russian Forces Considering Withdrawal from Southern Ukraine"
Russian Forces May Withdraw Through Dnipro River in Southern Ukraine
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Pyeonghwa] There are claims that Russian forces are considering withdrawal from the southern region of Ukraine.
On the 20th (local time), the UK Ministry of Defence stated on its official Twitter account that "Russian authorities are seriously considering a large-scale withdrawal from the area west of the Dnipro River," adding, "The main challenge of the Russian withdrawal operation is to retreat troops and equipment across the 1000-meter-wide river."
The UK Ministry of Defence cited Russian media reports as the basis for this assessment. Sergey Surovikin, the commander-in-chief of the Russian Joint Forces in the Ukrainian region, reportedly informed local media on the 18th that the wartime situation in the southern Kherson region is difficult. The UK Ministry of Defence described this as "unusual" and suggested that the Russian military might rely on military ferries while crossing the Dnipro River during the withdrawal.
The Russian military has recently been facing difficulties in the war with Ukraine. Until summer, they continued offensives against Ukraine, but since last month, they have begun to retreat in earnest. Following the eastern Kharkiv front, the southern Kherson front is now also at risk of being handed over to Ukraine. In response, Russia issued evacuation orders and martial law for the local residents of the area the day before. The Russian side claims that these measures are for the protection of residents, not for withdrawal.
The Kherson region was occupied by Russia immediately after the war with Ukraine began in February. It is considered a strategic stronghold from the Russian military's perspective. Last month, Russia decided to annex the region through a local referendum.
