Shinsegae Food announced on the 20th that it delivered eco-friendly compost made from coconut waste cultivation media to Haneul Farm in Mungyeong-si, Gyeongbuk. The eco-friendly compost delivered on this day was made by collecting and reprocessing the media (substance that supplies nutrients to plants) discarded after tomato cultivation at a smart farm in Nonsan, Chungnam, where Shinsegae Food contracts tomato cultivation.
This project was promoted as part of Shinsegae Food's eco-friendly management activities. Generally, cultivation media is treated as general business waste after crop harvest, which affects the environment and incurs separate disposal costs.
As a pilot project, Shinsegae Food manufactured compost from coconut waste cultivation media used at the Nonsan smart farm through an upcycling company and provided it to a cooperative farm growing romaine lettuce located in Mungyeong, Gyeongbuk. Additionally, Shinsegae Food plans to purchase romaine lettuce grown with the eco-friendly compost and use it in the production of sandwiches, salads, and other products.
Shinsegae Food plans to expand the target farms to Nonsan, Gimje, Goheung, and other areas, collecting waste cultivation media and recycling about 200 tons annually into eco-friendly compost. Furthermore, Shinsegae Food intends to support cooperative farms with eco-friendly compost, purchase agricultural products produced by these farms, and develop a new resource circulation model that commercializes these products.
