About 150 people attended the completion ceremony, including Jinju Mayor Cho Gyu-il, members of the National Assembly, provincial and city council members, local community leaders, and village residents.
The area where the Somangjinsan Lantern Theme Park was established had long been an unexecuted park used as farmland, housing, and warehouses, and it did not function properly as a park facility.
Therefore, the city developed it into an experiential park highlighting regional characteristics with the theme of lanterns to create a leisure space for urban residents, improve the excellent landscape along the Namgang River, and address the issue of long-term unexecuted urban parks.
Starting with land and obstruction compensation in October 2017, detailed design was completed in December 2019, and after finalizing the park development plan changes and consultations with related departments in January 2020, full-scale construction began in April 2020.
With a total project cost of 15.1 billion KRW, the city created a lantern-themed path, lantern garden, lawn yard, observation parking lot, and convenience facilities, and planted trees, transforming the area into a green tourist attraction featuring lanterns.
Additionally, to improve accessibility to Somangjinsan Lantern Park, an elevator installation project costing 1.8 billion KRW was completed, alleviating inconveniences for the elderly and those with mobility difficulties. During the lantern festival, citizens and tourists can more easily enjoy views of the Namgang River and Jinju Fortress from Somangjinsan Lantern Theme Park.
