Gurye-gun Launches New Technology to Ensure Stable Production of Horticultural Crops During High Temperatures
Pilot Application of New Temperature Reduction Technologies such as Fogging and Shade Screens
[Gurye=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yuk Miseok] Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do recently announced that it has successfully promoted the ‘Abnormal Weather Response Horticultural Crop Stable Production Technology Dissemination Pilot Project’ to support stable production of facility horticultural crops in preparation for abnormal weather such as global warming and heat waves.
From June to September this year, 100 million KRW including national funds was invested in four locations to disseminate new temperature reduction technologies such as fogging facilities, ventilation fans, and shading screens.
Inside the facility greenhouses during summer, temperatures often rise above 40℃, exceeding the optimal temperature for crop growth, making it difficult for crops to grow. Recently, due to warming and heat waves, the damage has been increasing.
The fogging system introduced this time works by spraying fine water particles into the air, which evaporate and lower the temperature inside the facility. It showed an effect of lowering the temperature by 5 to 8℃ after operating for 30 minutes around 2 p.m.
Also, when the spray nozzles are installed above the canopy, it is very effective in lowering the temperature near the crop growth points, promoting crop growth by maintaining appropriate temperature and humidity, reducing physiological disorders, and improving productivity.
The shading screen was installed on a trial basis at a strawberry farm, effectively blocking direct sunlight during the early transplanting stage and promoting establishment, showing very excellent pilot effects.
County Governor Kim Sun-ho said, “We will actively promote the dissemination project of new technologies that can respond to abnormal weather such as the increasing heat waves.”
