'Ordinary Citizens,' Not Police or Soldiers
Investigating Circumstances of Firearm Possession
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] The police are investigating the possession history of a .38 caliber pistol with a serial number in connection with an incident of attempted suicide by gunshot in Jamwon-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul.
According to a summary of Asia Economy's coverage on the 11th, the Seocho Police Station in Seoul is investigating an incident that occurred at around 5:36 a.m. on the same day, where a man in his 50s, Mr. A, attempted suicide using a firearm on the street in Jamwon-dong, Seocho-gu.
Mr. A sustained a penetrating head injury from the gunshot. He was immediately transported to a hospital and is currently undergoing surgery. It was reported that the bullet penetrated his head, leaving him in critical condition. It has been confirmed that Mr. A is a civilian, not a soldier or police officer.
The pistol that caused Mr. A's gunshot wound was found near his fallen body, and the firearm used was identified as an old model .38 caliber pistol. The police are currently investigating all agencies that manage firearms, including the Army Headquarters. A police official stated, "This is not the .38 caliber model issued to domestic police officers," adding, "It is a model that is several decades old." It was reported that live ammunition was loaded in the pistol.
However, it is known that there are difficulties in identifying possession through the serial number inquiry of the firearm. A police official said, "It is possible that computerized records were not well maintained several decades ago when this firearm was issued," and added, "We will continue the investigation regarding the possession of the firearm."
