Goheung-gun Yeojaman Selected for 'Marine Area Clean Fishery Regeneration Project' Competition
Promoting the Restoration of a Healthy Marine Environment through Clean Fishery Habitat Rehabilitation
[Goheung=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Shim Jeong-woo] Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Young-min) announced on the 11th that the Yeoja Bay area in Goheung-gun has been selected for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' public project, the '2022 Clean Fishing Ground Restoration Project.'
The Clean Fishing Ground Restoration Project is a program that collects and treats polluted sediments in overcrowded and aging aquaculture farms and surrounding waters to purify the seabed environment, thereby improving fishing ground productivity and creating a sustainable fishing ground environment.
The Yeoja Bay area in Goheung-gun is a production site for chamkokmak (short-necked clams), saekokmak (new clams), and bajirak (Manila clams). The county plans to invest a total project cost of 5 billion KRW, including 2.5 billion KRW in national funds, over two years from 2022 to 2023 to carry out clean fishing ground restoration projects such as fishing ground cleaning over an area of 3,500 hectares in Yeoja Bay.
A county official said, "We will do our best to systematically promote the Clean Fishing Ground Restoration Project to create a clean and sustainably productive fishing ground environment and to lead to increased income for fishermen."
He also stated, "To fulfill the 8th term election pledge of 'Promoting the Recovery of a Healthy Marine Environment,' we will strategically respond to securing national and provincial funds through attracting public projects and discovering new projects."
Meanwhile, Goheung-gun was also selected for the Deukryang Bay Clean Fishing Ground Restoration Project in 2021 and is currently promoting the project on a scale of 1,500 hectares with a total project cost of 5 billion KRW until this year.
