LG Chem is launching a social contribution initiative for ESG education targeting children and adolescents.

LG Chem announced on the 6th that starting from the 13th, it will recruit the second cohort of 'Green Class' for elementary, middle, and high schools as well as care institutions nationwide.

Green Class is a customized curriculum provided to public schools and care institutions aimed at nurturing ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) leaders for a sustainable society. It is a social contribution program for ESG education for children and adolescents first attempted domestically by LG Chem last year. The program is hosted by LG Chem and the Community Chest of Korea, organized by Hope Friends Korea Food for the Hungry International and Dong-A Science, and supported by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity.

In the first phase conducted last year, 483 elementary, middle, and high schools nationwide and 122 care institutions (such as local children's centers and schools prioritized for educational welfare) participated, with a total of 41,367 students learning about ESG. Ahead of the full-scale recruitment for the second phase, approximately 350 institutions with about 28,000 students rushed to pre-register, which offered offline textbooks and activity kits to the first 4,000 applicants on a first-come, first-served basis.

Educational institutions wishing to participate in the Green Class 2 this year can simply fill out an application form on LG Chem’s educational social contribution website, 'Like Green.' From this recruitment onward, anyone can receive free online educational content composed of lecture videos, student workbooks, and teacher’s guides and materials without any restrictions upon application.

The Green Class curriculum is divided into five themes based on the acronym G·R·E·E·N: Global warming, Responsibility, Energy, Ecosystem, and Next technology. Depending on the theme, students can systematically learn ESG by writing declarations of action to overcome the climate crisis, creating carbon-zero rules, gathering ideas for new materials, and developing AI algorithms that protect the environment.

This year’s education is especially segmented by difficulty levels for elementary and middle school students, allowing educational institutions to select programs suited to their circumstances. Additionally, career education materials have been added to help youth set their future directions.

Alongside Green Class, LG Chem operates an integrated program under the name ‘Like Green,’ which includes ▲online mentoring between university student mentors and youth mentees ▲the ESG campaign project ‘Green Concert’ ▲and ESG cultural content ‘Green Festival’ featuring expert speakers.

Going forward, Like Green plans to expand into a global ESG education platform by adding global content and an English website. Like Green contributes to raising sustainability awareness with participation from the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative.

Kang Jae-cheol, LG Chem’s Head of Sustainability, said, “To implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of providing quality education and addressing climate change, LG Chem is actively committed to ESG education,” adding, “We ask for the active participation of educational institutions so that children and adolescents can grow into leaders who will lead an eco-friendly future.”
