View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The Korean Medical Association and the Buchaepyo Gasong Foundation announced on the 6th that Professor Emeritus Shin Young-soo of Seoul National University College of Medicine has been selected as the recipient of the 8th Korean Medical Association Medical Contribution Award.
The Korean Medical Association Medical Contribution Award, sponsored by the Buchaepyo Gasong Foundation, is given to individuals or organizations who have devotedly contributed to the foundation of medical advancement in Korea. Professor Shin was selected this year in recognition of his significant contributions to the development of international health care in East Asia.
Professor Shin, who has contributed to domestic and international health promotion for over 50 years, served as the 2nd President of the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service, laying the foundation for the current organization. From 2009, he served for 10 years as the Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Regional Office, leading the advancement of health care education and systems.
In recognition of these achievements, Professor Shin received the Moran Medal of the Order of Civil Merit in 2003, followed by the Mugunghwa Medal in 2015, the highest honor available to Korean citizens. He also established the Department of Medical Management at Seoul National University College of Medicine, establishing health policy and medical management as independent academic fields, thereby laying the foundation for the development of the health care environment and dedicating himself to nurturing future scholars. The award ceremony will be held at the 56th anniversary celebration of the Korean Medical Association on the same day.

The Buchaepyo Gasong Foundation was established in April 2008 through the private donations of Chairman Yun Kwang-yeol of Dongwha Pharm and his wife Kim Soon-nyeo, based on the philosophy that "corporate profits should be returned to society." The foundation has established and jointly sponsors several awards: the Yun Kwang-yeol Medical Award (co-established with the Korean Medical Association in 2009), the Yun Kwang-yeol Pharmaceutical Award (co-established with the Korean Pharmaceutical Association in 2008), the Yun Kwang-yeol Pharmaceutical Contribution Award (co-established with the Korean Pharmaceutical Association in 2019), and the Yun Kwang-yeol Dental Medical Service Award (co-established with the Korean Dental Association in 2012). It supports academic research projects and has provided scholarships to university students who excel academically but face financial difficulties.
