Professor Lee Hyo-sang of Indiana University Awarded Order of Cultural Merit, Hwagwan... Thirteen Recipients of Government Awards on Hangul Day
KBS Korean Language Research Department, Professor Kwon Jae-il of Seoul National University, and Others Receive Sejong Cultural Award
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 3rd the recipients of the Sejong Cultural Awards and thirteen individuals honored for their contributions to the development of Hangeul on the occasion of the 576th Hangeul Day.
The Sejong Cultural Awards are presidential and prime ministerial commendations given to individuals or organizations with outstanding achievements in five fields. This year's recipients are: Korean Culture division - Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) Korean Language Research Department (Prime Minister's Commendation); Arts division - Hyun Byung-chan, Chairman of Jeju Hangeul Calligraphy Love Association; Academic division - Kwon Jae-il, Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at Seoul National University; International Cultural Exchange division - Sejong Cultural Association; Cultural Diversity division - Kim Valeria, Principal of Choi Jae-hyung Korean Ethnic School in Ussuriysk, Russia (all Presidential Commendations). The award ceremony will be held on the 8th at the outdoor stage of the National Hangeul Museum during the '2022 Hangeul Week' eve event.
The awards for contributions to the development of Hangeul honor individuals and organizations dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of Hangeul and the Korean language. This year's grand prize recipients are: Lee Hyo-sang, Associate Professor of East Asian Studies at Indiana University, USA (Order of Cultural Merit); Lee Se-hee, staff member of KBS Cooperative Production Department (Cultural Medal); Lee Kyung-ah, Administrative Officer at the Ministry of Government Legislation; Paraz Atif, Director of the Sejong Institute at the National University of Foreign Languages in Islamabad, Pakistan; Korean Educational Broadcasting System (EBS) (all Presidential Commendations); Heo Cheol-ho, reporter at Gyeongnam Newspaper; Lee Jeong-hoon, special education teacher at Jeju Youngji School; Diana Yucel, Assistant Professor of Korean Language and Literature at the University of Bucharest, Romania (all Prime Minister's Commendations). They will receive their plaques at the 576th Hangeul Day celebration ceremony on the 9th.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will hold the '2022 Hangeul Week' from the 4th to the 10th under the theme 'Thank You, Hangeul.' The eve event will feature performances by the Seoul Orchestra, Seoul Kodai Singers, and singer Younha. The following day, at the same venue, the Beautiful Hangeul Nuri Concert will include fusion gugak (traditional Korean music) performances, joint performances by the Dortmund Children's Choir from Germany, Jeju Jerajin Children's Choir, Yongin City Boys and Girls Choir, and a stage by singer Yang Hee-eun.
