Jeju Police Agency Adjusts Speed Limits on 10 Sections of Coastal Roads
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The Jeju Police Agency (Chief Lee Sang-ryul) announced on the 28th that it held a 'Traffic Safety Deliberation Committee' on the 27th and partially adjusted the speed limits on 10 sections, including coastal roads with accident risks, by flexibly operating the speed limits.
This deliberation included a proposal to raise the speed limit from 50 km/h to 60 km/h on arterial roads with low accident risk and few pedestrians to flexibly operate the Safe Speed 5030 policy, and a proposal to lower the speed limit on places requiring enhanced pedestrian safety and with accident risks, such as Aewol Coastal Road, where a recent major traffic accident occurred.
As a result, some sections of Iljudong-ro in Gujwa-eup, Jeju City (Gimnyeong-ri) were raised from 50 to 60 km/h, some sections of Iljuseo-ro in Hagwi-ri (Hagwi) were raised from 50 to 60 km/h, and some sections of Iljuseo-ro in Andeok, Seogwipo City (Gamsan, Hwasun) were raised from 50 to 60 km/h.
Some sections of Iljudong-ro in Namwon, Seogwipo City (Taeheung) were raised from 50 to 60 km/h, and the speed limit on Aewol Coastal Road, the site of a recent large rental car accident in July (3 deaths), was lowered from 50 to 40 km/h.
Additionally, new side roads in Nohyeong-dong and coastal roads without designated speed limits were set to 40 km/h.
Following the approval of the speed limit adjustments in the above sections, Jeju Police plan to coordinate with the road management authorities (local governments) to maintain speed limit-related facilities, and the adjusted speed limits will be applied simultaneously with the replacement of the facilities.
Also, in locations where speed cameras are installed, safety signs and road markings will be maintained, and a roughly three-month enforcement grace period will be provided through publicity.
A Jeju Police official stated, "We will continue to prioritize pedestrian safety by strengthening cooperation among institutions such as the Autonomous Police Committee, local governments, the Road Traffic Authority, and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority," and added, "We plan to flexibly review speed limit adjustments in line with changes in Jeju's traffic environment."
He added, "We urge drivers to comply with traffic laws such as speed limits to ensure the safety and walking rights of vulnerable road users, and to drive safely with the mindset that drivers also become pedestrians once they get out of their vehicles."
