[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] The Korea Tourism Organization announced on the 19th that it will hold the 'Tourism Data AI Competition' to develop artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms utilizing public data in the tourism sector.

The competition will be held online on Dacon, the largest domestic data analysis platform, until the 31st of next month. The task is to develop the optimal algorithm that automatically classifies types of tourist spots by using the text and image data of over 23,000 Korean tourist point-of-interest (POI) information owned by the organization as AI training data.

Currently, tourist information disclosed through the organization's websites such as 'Korea Tourism Organization's Korea Travel' is classified manually. By introducing AI algorithms, the organization expects to automate this process, thereby generating more data and improving processing efficiency and search capabilities.

Judging will be conducted through formulas evaluating classification performance and strict code reviews by experts. One grand prize team (Korea Tourism Organization President's Award), one excellence award team, and two encouragement award teams will be finally selected. The prize money totals 10 million KRW, with 5 million KRW for first place, 3 million KRW for second place, and 1 million KRW each for third places.

Anyone interested in AI algorithm development and data analysis can participate individually or form a team of up to five members.

Jo Yunmi, head of the Tourism Big Data Strategy Team at the Korea Tourism Organization, said, “Various travel applications applying the organization's tourist point-of-interest information are currently being developed. Through this competition, we hope that excellent algorithms utilizing AI will be created, leading to the establishment of an efficient tourism information management system and open innovation.”
