New Confirmed Cases 43,457, Down 8,417 from Previous Day... 57 Deaths (Update)
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwak Minjae] As the scale of the COVID-19 outbreak continues to decline, the number of new confirmed cases fell to the 40,000 range on the 17th.
According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters, as of midnight on this day, 43,457 new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the cumulative total to 24,359,702. This is 8,417 fewer cases than the previous day’s 51,874.
Although this is 752 more than the 42,705 cases reported a week earlier on the 10th, that day was during the Chuseok holiday period, when the number of diagnostic tests was lower, so a simple comparison is considered meaningless. Compared to two weeks ago on the 3rd (79,719 cases), it is 36,262 fewer cases. This represents a reduction to about half, showing a clear downward trend.
From the 11th to this day, the daily new confirmed cases for one week were 28,201 → 36,925 → 57,291 → 93,967 → 71,471 → 51,874 → 43,457, averaging 54,741 cases per day.
Imported cases were 280, 72 fewer than the previous day (352). After four days since the 13th, the number dropped from the 300s to the 200s. Domestic regional infections excluding imported cases were 43,177.
New confirmed cases by region (including imported cases) were: Gyeonggi 11,609, Seoul 7,659, Gyeongnam 2,620, Incheon 2,606, Gyeongbuk 2,515, Daegu 2,477, Busan 2,080, Chungnam 1,847, Jeonbuk 1,673, Chungbuk 1,553, Gangwon 1,490, Jeonnam 1,405, Daejeon 1,273, Gwangju 1,232, Ulsan 718, Jeju 352, Sejong 327, Quarantine 21.
As the number of new confirmed cases decreases, the number of critically ill patients and deaths is also declining. As of midnight on this day, the number of critically ill patients was 477, 39 fewer than the previous day (516). The number of deaths from COVID-19 the previous day was 57, three fewer than the day before (60). All deaths occurred in those aged 60 and above. Among them, 37 (64.9%) were aged 80 or older, 15 were in their 70s, and 5 were in their 60s. The cumulative number of deaths is 27,782, with a cumulative fatality rate of 0.11%.
As of 5 p.m. the previous day, the bed occupancy rates were 27.8% for critically ill beds (514 used out of 1,846), 38.0% for semi-critical beds, and 24.6% for moderate beds.
