Yoon Geon-young: "Kim Geon-hee Appears to Be in an Extraterritorial Zone Untouchable by Anyone"
Early Surgery on Presidential Office Allegations Would Help Government
President Yoon Should Reflect on the Lesson of Choi Soon-sil"
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Yoon Gun-young, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, argued on the 15th that revealing and addressing the suspicions related to the Presidential Office through special investigations or parliamentary audits would be beneficial for both the Yoon Suk-yeol administration and South Korea. He viewed the ongoing suspicions surrounding First Lady Kim Geon-hee as being entrenched in a zone of extraterritoriality where no one can intervene.
On the same day, appearing on MBC Radio’s ‘Kim Jong-bae’s Focus,’ Yoon said regarding suspicions related to the Presidential Office construction or the presidential residence construction contracts, "I believe these must be uncovered," adding, "No matter how much they try to hide it, it will inevitably come to light." He cited the Choi Soon-sil political scandal as a representative example related to state governance, saying, "The ruling People Power Party was desperate to hide it, but within just one or two years, it was revealed as the Choi Soon-sil scandal."
Yoon emphasized, "If there is a problem, it is right to reveal it early and address it," and added, "I think that is good for both the Yoon Suk-yeol administration and South Korea." He further remarked, "I think President Yoon Suk-yeol should deeply reflect on the lessons from the political scandal."
Yoon said, "Currently, the Yongsan Presidential Office seems to be a situation where lies beget lies," and added, "I think it needs to be cut off once. Whether through a special investigation or a parliamentary audit within this regular session of the National Assembly, cutting it off would be helpful for the Yoon Suk-yeol administration."
He particularly criticized the Presidential Office for failing to properly respond to the suspicions related to the First Lady.
Regarding the controversies surrounding the First Lady, Yoon said, "In short, it’s a situation where she is being punished unnecessarily," and explained, "For example, regarding the jewelry, considering the scale of her assets, I think it is possible for her to own that amount of jewelry. If so, simply admitting that there was a mistake in the asset declaration would have resolved the issue within half a day." He continued, "Instead, by awkwardly claiming that the jewelry was borrowed from an acquaintance, the suspicions were rather amplified. If it was indeed borrowed, naturally questions like from whom and at what cost would arise, but because they were unprepared, they couldn’t clear it all at once."
