On the 6th, two people miraculously survived while trying to move a car to a safe place from a flooded underground parking lot of an apartment in Nam-gu, Pohang, Gyeongbuk.
However, one of the two survivors lost her teenage son who had gone down to the parking lot with her.
According to the Gyeongbuk Fire Headquarters on the 7th, on the previous day, the 6th, woman A (52) was rescued after being missing for 14 hours in the flooded underground parking lot of an apartment in Indeok-dong, Nam-gu, Pohang.
Ms. A was found near the ceiling of the underground parking lot by the rescue team. The rescue team found her around 9:41 p.m., lying on top of pipes, relying on an air pocket space where air was secured.
This was the second miracle following the rescue of a man in his 30s about two hours earlier. After that, no more miracles occurred in this apartment. Ms. A had been in that space with her teenage son 14 hours earlier.
Fortunately, the water did not rise above the pipes, so she was holding on in an air pocket area where she could breathe up to the ceiling. She had long lost hold of her son's hand.
At the time of discovery, Ms. A showed symptoms of chills due to hypothermia but was reported to have no other health issues.
Immediately after being rescued, Ms. A searched for her son who had followed her to move the car. She said, “The car was in the basement, so I went to move it with my son, and this happened,” but after a search that continued until dawn, her son was changed from a missing person to a resuscitated patient on the missing persons list.
The fire authorities announced that by 2:15 a.m. on the 7th, after the rescue operation began, a total of nine people including Ms. A were found, but seven of them were in cardiac arrest.
They included one 70-year-old man, one 65-year-old woman, one 68-year-old man, unidentified men and women in their 50s, one man in his 20s, and one teenage boy.
The police confirmed that among them was Ms. A’s son. Neighbors said he was called “mommy’s shadow” because he liked his mother very much. When the heavy rain poured and the car evacuation announcement was heard, it seems the son followed his mother as she left the front door.
Besides Ms. A, a 39-year-old man B was rescued from the apartment complex parking lot. Mr. B also held onto pipes near the ceiling and breathed through an air pocket, enduring until the drainage work progressed, then swam near the parking lot entrance and was rescued by the 119 rescue team who tied a rope and entered.
After being rescued, Mr. B was transported to the hospital and told his wife, “There were times I wanted to give up, but I couldn’t because of the children.” Mr. B also fought death for about 12 hours.
After the typhoon hit, seven residents of this apartment died in the same underground parking lot, and two survived.
The heavy rain that fell across Pohang flooded the Pohang Steelworks, factories, and villages, causing great suffering to the citizens of Pohang. Choi, a staff member in his 50s at a POSCO partner company, said, “The neighborhood where I live was flooded, and the company I went to work at turned into mud, so I have no idea how to restore it,” expressing his distress.
