[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] On the afternoon of the 6th, President Yoon Suk-yeol, as Typhoon No. 11 'Hinnamnor' moved out into the East Sea, said, "Just as we devoted all efforts to typhoon response, please focus on quickly conducting damage assessments and preparing effective support measures for affected residents."
Especially, President Yoon, who repeatedly urged "action first, report later" the day before the typhoon approached the Korean Peninsula, emphasized, "Rapid recovery is the top priority after the disaster ends."
He also instructed to thoroughly investigate the circumstances of the incident where seven people went missing in an underground parking lot of an apartment in Pohang, Gyeongbuk.
President Yoon made these remarks during the typhoon 'Hinnamnor' damage status inspection meeting held at the National Crisis Management Center of the Yongsan Presidential Office in the afternoon. Presidential spokesperson Kang In-sun conveyed, "Starting with today's damage status inspection meeting, we will mobilize all available administrative resources for swift recovery."
President Yoon first expressed condolences to the citizens affected by the typhoon. He said, "There were unfortunate casualties due to Hinnamnor, and about 4,600 people were urgently evacuated," adding, "I sincerely offer my condolences to all those who suffered damages, big or small."
He also added, "I deeply thank the firefighters, coast guards, police officers, soldiers, and on-site personnel who fought fiercely against the strong rain and wind."
Regarding the incident where seven people went missing in the underground parking lot of an apartment in Indeok-dong, Nam-gu, Pohang, he expressed his sorrow and asked for a thorough investigation of the circumstances," the spokesperson said. President Yoon then received detailed damage reports from the mayors of affected local governments including Pohang, Gyeongju, Seogwipo, Geoje, Tongyeong, and Changwon.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang is currently leading the search for the missing persons in the underground parking lot, so the vice mayor reported the damage situation to President Yoon on his behalf.
President Yoon also received reports from the heads of the Korea Meteorological Administration, Fire Agency, National Police Agency, Korea Coast Guard, Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and Ministry of National Defense.
In a phone call with Defense Minister Lee Jong-seop and the commander of the 1st Marine Division, President Yoon mentioned the rescue activities carried out by the Marines in Pohang, saying, "I send my encouragement to the marines for their hard work in protecting the lives and safety of the people. The public shares the same supportive feelings for the help extended to isolated residents."
He added, "Now is the time for swift recovery," urging, "Let us unite our efforts so that farmers, fishermen, small business owners, and those who lost their livelihoods can regain their daily lives and celebrate the Chuseok holiday."
