Hyundai Heavy Industries Group announced on the 6th that it participated in 'Gastech 2022,' held from the 5th to the 8th in Milan, Italy. Marking its 50th anniversary this year, Gastech is the world's largest exhibition in the gas sector, including LNG (liquefied natural gas), hydrogen, and low carbon, attracting 750 companies from 60 countries and over 38,000 visitors worldwide.
Hyundai Heavy Industries Group participated with about 30 executives and employees from sales, research, and engineering fields, including Jung Ki-sun, President of HD Hyundai. They set up a 60-pyeong (approx. 198 sqm) booth exhibiting models of LNG carriers, LPG carriers, and introduced state-of-the-art technologies.
Especially during the event, they received a total of 10 technology certifications and signed technology cooperation memorandums of understanding (MOUs) from global institutions and companies for liquefied carbon dioxide carriers, ammonia-powered and carrying vessels, LNG-hydrogen dual-fuel engines, digital twin (HiDTS), and autonomous navigation solutions (HiNAS 2.0), gaining recognition for their technological capabilities in eco-friendly and digital ships.
Hyundai Heavy Industries Group received basic approvals (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping and the Marshall Islands Registry for the world's largest 74,000㎥ ultra-large liquefied carbon dioxide carrier jointly developed with Hyundai Glovis and G-Marine Service. The 40,000㎥ and 30,000㎥ liquefied carbon dioxide carriers also obtained basic approvals from Lloyd's Register and the Liberian Registry.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) projected in its report titled '2050 Global Carbon Neutral Scenario' that carbon capture, utilization, and storage technology (CCUS) will account for 18% of the total reduction needed to achieve global carbon neutrality. Hyundai Heavy Industries Group is focusing all efforts on advancing the technology of liquefied carbon dioxide carriers, whose demand is expected to increase with the growth of the CCUS market.
The 60,000 and 40,000 cubic meter ammonia-powered and carrying vessels received certification from the American Bureau of Shipping, and together with the 91,000 cubic meter vessel certified last September, they can meet diverse market demands.
Additionally, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group obtained basic certification from DNV for LNG-hydrogen dual-fuel engines required for liquefied hydrogen carriers, the related cargo handling system (CHS), and low-flashpoint fuel injection devices capable of supplying fuels with low flash points such as methanol and ammonia.
In the digital ship sector, they acquired basic certification from Norway's DNV for their self-developed digital twin virtual commissioning solution. Furthermore, they signed MOUs with Siemens, a leading company in the digital twin field, and DNV to collaborate on technology development and business cooperation for ship intelligence for autonomous navigation and optimization of next-generation ships using methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, and more.
Avikus, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group's autonomous navigation specialist company, also signed an MOU with the Liberian Registry and DNV for product certification (Technical Certification) of HiNAS 2.0. Avikus secured the world's first order for the second-stage autonomous navigation solution HiNAS 2.0 last August.
On the 7th, they will hold a technology seminar (Hyundai Heavy Industries Group Tech Forum) under the theme 'More Eco-friendly and Smarter Solutions for the Future.' A Hyundai Heavy Industries Group official said, "Our technological capabilities leading the future ship sector were recognized during this event," adding, "We will lead the eco-friendly and digital paradigm shift from the forefront and successfully complete commercialization."
