Summer Vacation Forgotten for Talent Donation! ... Dongmyeong University Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Continues 'Service Learning' Activities at Local Children's Center
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] Students majoring in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at Dongmyung University are continuing various meaningful talent donation activities even during the hot summer vacation.
Third-year students in the Speech-Language Pathology department had opportunities for diverse field practice at six institutions, including Garammwe Community Child Center and Dongnae Raemian I-Park Daycare Center, during the summer vacation in July and August.
The students assessed and guided children who had difficulties with reading and writing at the community child centers.
At the daycare centers, they spent time with young children to observe actual language development curriculum content and conducted language evaluations for children with pronunciation errors or delayed speech.
Fourth-year students continued their clinical practice in evaluation and therapy for individuals with difficulties in speech, language, and reading at the Dongmyung Language Clinical Center even during the vacation.
Although the clinical practice for fourth-year students concluded with the progress report meeting on the 19th, the special lectures for the national exam continue weekly.
Second-year students, under the guidance of Professor Kim Ki-joo, participated in service learning (a combination of volunteering and learning) every Saturday, engaging in cultural experiences with adolescents with developmental disabilities at the Sorinara Language Development Center.
Participating students said, “When learning from books, I did not fully understand the characteristics of autism spectrum disorder such as repetitive behaviors, but spending time weekly with adolescents with developmental disabilities helped me understand properly,” and “I learned more than I taught during the five weeks of meetings.”
The Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Department’s service learning PRES team received an excellence award at the final service learning report meeting on the 19th.
