[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Gun-chan] A man in his 40s who was twice punished for murder and again killed his cohabiting partner was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The Criminal Division 2 of the Gangneung Branch of Chuncheon District Court (Chief Judge Lee Dong-hee) announced on the 27th that A (47), who was tried on charges of murder, was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was also ordered to wear an electronic location tracking device (electronic anklet) for 30 years.
A was prosecuted on charges of stabbing his cohabiting partner B dozens of times with a weapon and killing her between the night of May 5 and the early morning of May 6.
According to the investigation, A met B by chance around mid-April, drank together, developed feelings, and started living together at B's house. On the day of the crime, about two weeks later, it was confirmed that A killed B after a quarrel, suspecting that B was seeing another man.
A brutally committed the crime by repeatedly striking B with a weapon, and when the weapon broke, he wielded another weapon, inflicting dozens of fatal wounds.
After the crime, A fled but was arrested by the police and reportedly claimed, "I drank a lot and don't remember."
Previously, in 2001, A was sentenced to eight years in prison for killing his ex-wife who brought up the topic of "breaking up."
In February 2009, near the end of his sentence, A remarried a Vietnamese woman. While living in Vietnam, he developed an affair with another Vietnamese woman and, when attempting to marry her, killed the mother of the woman who opposed the marriage. A was sentenced to 14 years in prison by a Vietnamese court and served about eight years and five months before being released and deported to Korea in 2020.
About two years after being deported, A brutally killed his cohabiting partner again and was ultimately sentenced to permanent isolation.
The court also ordered the attachment of an electronic anklet. A's risk of reoffending was assessed as "high." Personality tests showed that he easily exhibited violent tendencies in relationships with others. Alcohol-related tests also revealed a tendency toward violence when experiencing negative emotions while intoxicated.
The court stated, "The method and content of killing the victim were cruel and severe, making the nature of the crime extremely bad and highly blameworthy," and added, "The physical and mental pain and fear the victim must have felt are expected to have been extremely severe beyond imagination."
It continued, "The defendant has a history of two prior murder convictions before this case, and the interval between the end of punishment and reoffending is short," emphasizing, "There is almost no preventive effect from punishment on the defendant, and rather, the risk of reoffending upon returning to society is high."
