US Summons South Korea's Ambassador to Russia, Demands Halt to Military Actions Near Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant
[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] The U.S. Department of State summoned the Russian Ambassador to the United States to urge the cessation of shelling military actions around the Ukrainian Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
On the 22nd (local time), the U.S. Department of State announced that it summoned Anatoly Antonov, the Russian Ambassador to the U.S., on the 18th to make this demand. At this meeting, a message was delivered to transfer control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to Ukraine and to stop military actions at or near the Ukrainian nuclear power plant. Additionally, warnings regarding the Ukraine war were issued.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant complex, which has six reactors, is the largest single facility in Europe. Russia, which invaded Ukraine, occupied this facility in early March. Recently, frequent shelling near this facility has raised safety concerns.
U.S. President Joe Biden also emphasized the need to ensure the safety of the Ukrainian Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant during a phone call with the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany the previous day. President Biden stated that it is important for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to visit promptly to confirm the safety status, along with refraining from military actions around the nuclear power plant.
