LGU+ Delivers 50 Million KRW to Descendants of Independence Activists with Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs
Collecting and Delivering Donations for the Gwangbokjeol Campaign
[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] LG Uplus and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs held a ceremony on the 18th to deliver donations raised through a social network service (SNS) campaign commemorating Liberation Day to the descendants of independence activists.
The donation ceremony held at the LG Uplus Yongsan building was attended by key figures including Hwang Hyun-sik, CEO of LG Uplus, Park Min-sik, head of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, and three descendants of independence activists.
LG Uplus and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs donated 50 million KRW raised through the SNS campaign "A Daily Life Not to Be Taken for Granted, Never Forget" to the descendants of Hawaiian independence activists. Since next year marks the 120th anniversary of Korean immigration to Hawaii, the three descendants decided to generously donate the funds through the nonprofit Warm Companion and the Korean American Foundation Hawaii to be used for supporting the descendants of independence patriots.
LG Uplus has been running this campaign for three years since 2020 with the purpose of re-examining and remembering independence activists who devoted themselves to Korea’s liberation but are not well known. The campaign conducted via SNS has recorded over 8 million cumulative views and more than 140,000 participations.
This year, to encourage participation, gamification content related to the independence movement was developed. The game consists of content that helps participants understand the activities of Hawaiian patriotic organizations, such as navigating through sugarcane fields toward the final destination of "Liberation." The campaign was structured so that 815 KRW in donations accumulated per participant.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, participating in the campaign for the first time this year, selected the independence movement organizations active in Hawaii as the independence activists who best align with the campaign’s purpose and deserve reappraisal.
Park Min-sik, head of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, said, "Many MZ generation participants took part in the campaign honoring the independence patriots who demonstrated patriotism in Hawaii over 100 years ago," adding, "We hope that the culture of honoring veterans, where future generations do not forget and remember the noble spirit of independence activists, will continue in daily life."
