[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Seongmyeong Jo) conducted an on-site inspection on the 3rd to assess the progress of the Yeongdong-daero complex development project and to preemptively block risk factors for major accidents.
About 10 officials, including Gangnam-gu Mayor Seongmyeong Jo, the Head of the Major Accident Prevention Office, and the site manager, attended the inspection. They received a briefing on the construction progress at Section 2 of the Yeongdong-daero complex development and then toured the site.
Since April 1, Gangnam-gu has been the only autonomous district in Seoul operating a dedicated organization for major accident prevention at the department level rather than as a team. Focusing on field-centered preventive activities, they additionally hired one safety manager and one specialist for safety inspections of public facilities, deploying a total of 11 personnel.
The Major Accident Prevention Office conducted safety inspections at about 300 sites, including service sites, construction sites, and public facilities where accidents could occur, identifying 812 hazardous and risky factors and taking corrective actions. Since June, to prevent summer disasters, they have intensively inspected 22 vulnerable facilities such as cultural centers and daycare centers for heavy rain, strong winds, pests, and odors.
Additionally, they voluntarily inspect 116 district-run facilities not subject to the Major Accident Punishment Act, taking the lead in proactive disaster prevention.
Furthermore, to raise awareness of disaster prevention, they conducted 29 practical training sessions for district office employees and public facility personnel, with a total of 3,629 participants completing the training.
Gangnam-gu Mayor Seongmyeong Jo said, “In the 8th term of the elected government, Gangnam-gu will continue to prioritize the protection of residents’ lives and bodies as the highest value, realizing ‘Accident-Free Gangnam, Safe Gangnam.’ Since the ultimate goal of the Major Accident Punishment Act is prevention rather than punishment, I ask everyone to report any risk factors, no matter how minor, at any time.”
