View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Samsung Electronics showcased a large number of next-generation memory solutions in the United States to handle the surging data demand driven by AI (artificial intelligence), metaverse expansion, and more. In particular, it attracted attention by unveiling storage solutions at the petabyte (1PB = 1 million GB, gigabytes) scale.
According to Samsung Electronics on the 3rd, Vice President Choi Jinhyuk of the Memory Business Division's Solution Development Office delivered a keynote speech titled "Memory Innovation in the Big Data Era" at the world's largest flash memory industry conference, the 'Flash Memory Summit 2022,' where he introduced memory solutions. The summit, held the previous day (local time), is the world's largest flash memory industry conference.
At the summit, Vice President Choi explained, "With the expansion of AI, metaverse, IoT (Internet of Things), future vehicles, and next-generation communications, data is explosively increasing, causing a 'data gravity' phenomenon." He emphasized the need for innovative advancements in memory technology to move, store, process, and manage large volumes of data.
First, Samsung attracted attention by unveiling 'PB Storage,' capable of storing petabyte-scale data. As data demand rapidly increases, surpassing GB and TB (terabyte) levels and entering the 'PB era,' Samsung developed and revealed this solution.
PB Storage dramatically increases storage capacity, enabling vast amounts of data to be processed with minimal servers. It also has the advantage of minimizing energy consumption. Samsung explained that it was able to create PB Storage thanks to collaboration with global companies during the development of various forms and stack structure technologies of high-capacity SSDs (solid-state drives) used in PC storage devices.
Next, Samsung introduced the 'Memory Semantic SSD,' a solution applicable to fields that utilize many small-sized data such as AI and ML (machine learning). The product features random read speeds and response times up to 20 times faster than general SSDs.
The Memory Semantic SSD is designed to transmit data through the next-generation interface CXL (Compute Express Link). It supports effective reading and writing of small-sized data via an internal DRAM cache memory. The CXL interface is a system devised to more effectively utilize accelerators, memory, storage devices, and others used alongside CPUs (central processing units) in high-performance computing.
Samsung also unveiled a 'Telemetry' management system. This risk prevention technology detects abnormal situations that may occur during SSD use in advance. By analyzing components such as NAND flash, DRAM, controllers embedded in the SSD, as well as SSD metadata, it identifies potential abnormal situation risks beforehand to support customers' stable server operations.
Additionally, Samsung Electronics announced plans to begin mass production this month of the industry's first UFS (Universal Flash Storage) 4.0 memory. UFS 4.0 memory is expected to be installed not only in flagship smartphones requiring rapid large-capacity data processing for high-resolution content but also in AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality) devices.
Furthermore, Samsung showcased other products including the industry's first mass-produced PCIe 5.0 (slot standard) enterprise server SSD 'PM1743,' the 24G SAS (standard) based SSD 'PM1653,' SmartSSD, and CXL DRAM.
