Cho Jae-ho, Administrator of Rural Development Administration, Visits Ginseng Farming Sites to Address Heatwave Response
[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Kim Hyewon] On the 29th, when a heatwave warning was issued, Cho Jaeho, Administrator of the Rural Development Administration, visited a ginseng farming site in Gimje, Jeonbuk, to check the growth status of ginseng and announced that he would strengthen on-site technical support to minimize damage in high-temperature farming conditions.
Ginseng suffers from heat damage when soil moisture content is below 10% and temperatures rise above 30℃ for consecutive days, causing the salt concentration in the soil to increase, drying out the fine roots (rootlets) and ultimately killing the entire plant.
The farm visited this time cultivates ginseng both in open fields and in facility greenhouses, improving shading methods in the greenhouses and remotely controlling the facilities using information and communication technology (ICT) equipment according to weather conditions.
Administrator Cho listened to the opinions of farmers who improved the cultivation environment to prevent ginseng heat damage and stated that the Rural Development Administration will strive to expand the dissemination of heat-resistant cultivation facilities and cultivation methods developed through research to reduce damage to crops vulnerable to high temperatures.
He then moved to the Chungcheongbuk-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, urging meticulous support for farming technologies for crops and livestock to prepare for heatwaves (high temperatures) and to strengthen promotion of heat illness prevention among farmers.
At the site, he carefully examined the growth status and disease occurrence of crops in major local vegetable and fruit production areas, ordering active involvement of crop-specific experts to resolve issues such as growth retardation or nutrient deficiencies caused by the heatwave.
