Two Vehicle Models Including Hyundai and BMW Recalled Due to Engine Stalling Issues
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Min-young] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 21st that Hyundai Motor Company and BMW Korea will voluntarily take corrective actions (recalls) for manufacturing defects in a total of 4,135 vehicles across 2 models that were manufactured, imported, or sold by the respective manufacturers.
A total of 4,072 units of The New Palisade, manufactured and sold by Hyundai Motor Company, were found to have a software error in the engine control unit, which could cause the engine to stall when the driver is coasting at low speeds (around 25 km/h). These vehicles can receive a free software update starting from the 21st at Hyundai Motor’s High-Tech Center and Blue Hands service centers.
For 63 units of the 218d Active Tourer (pre-sale) imported and sold by BMW Korea, a software error in the pedestrian protection system was identified. If the sensor that detects speed and other factors malfunctions, the warning light does not illuminate, preventing the driver from recognizing the fault and getting timely repairs. Consequently, the pedestrian protection system may not activate in the event of a collision, increasing the risk of injury to pedestrians. These vehicles will be available for sale after a software update at official BMW service centers starting from the 22nd.
Regarding this recall, each manufacturer will notify vehicle owners of the corrective measures via postal mail and mobile text messages. If vehicle owners have repaired the defect at their own expense before the recall, they can apply for reimbursement of the repair costs from the manufacturer.
