[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Prime Minister Han Duck-soo convened an emergency meeting of related ministers on the 18th to respond to the strike situation at subcontractors of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).
According to the Prime Minister's Office, Prime Minister Han convened an emergency meeting of related ministers regarding DSME at the Government Seoul Office around 11 a.m. that day to discuss response measures.
Earlier, on the 14th, at the National Affairs Inspection Coordination Meeting, Prime Minister Han warned, "If the occupation stops and dialogue begins, the government will actively support negotiations. However, if illegal acts continue, we will have no choice but to respond strictly according to law and principles."
Attendees at the related ministers' meeting included Prime Minister Han, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Choo Kyung-ho, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Lee Chang-yang, Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min, Minister of Employment and Labor Lee Jeong-sik, and Minister of Justice Han Dong-hoon.
It was reported that Prime Minister Han briefed President Yoon Suk-yeol on the meeting results during the weekly gathering held at the Yongsan Presidential Office Building at noon that day. Based on the meeting results, the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety plan to issue a statement at 4:30 p.m. that day.
The subcontractor labor union of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, the Korean Metal Workers' Union under the Federation of Korean Trade Unions, Geoje-Tongyeong-Goseong Shipbuilding Subcontractors Branch, has been on strike since the 2nd of last month, demanding a "30% wage increase" and "recognition of union activities including full-time union officials."
