Gyeongbuk Fire Headquarters Urges Caution for Outdoor Activities During Heatwave Hours... 48 Transported This Year, 58% Heat Exhaustion
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Gwi-yeol] Gyeongbuk Province has urged caution for outdoor activities during heatwave hours as numerous heat-related illnesses have occurred due to this summer's heatwave.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the first heatwave warning this summer came about 20 days earlier than last year, and due to the influence of La Ni?a, a "heat dome phenomenon," where hot air covers the ground like a lid, is expected to raise temperatures higher than usual.
According to data from the Gyeongbuk Fire Headquarters, there were a total of 311 heatwave-related dispatches during the summer over the past three years, with 305 people transported.
This year, there have been 48 dispatches so far, transporting 48 heat-related patients. Heat exhaustion accounted for the largest portion with 28 cases (58%), followed by heat syncope with 8 cases (17%), heat cramps with 7 cases (15%), and heatstroke with 5 cases (10%).
By time of day, 31 cases occurred between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., accounting for 65% of all patients.
Special attention is needed for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, elderly living alone, outdoor workers, chronic disease patients, and children to refrain from outdoor activities during daytime hours. To prevent heat-related illnesses, the following precautions should be observed.
▲ Avoid going out between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. ▲ Drink water frequently to prevent dehydration ▲ Move to a cool place if experiencing dizziness or nausea ▲ Use "cooling shelters" such as town offices, welfare centers, and senior centers ▲ Maintain appropriate body temperature with air conditioning, use parasols when going out ▲ If experiencing high fever, headache, rapid pulse and breathing, moist or dry skin, fatigue, or muscle cramps, call 119
The Gyeongbuk Fire Headquarters operates a heatwave emergency squad in preparation for heat-related illness occurrences and also provides information on emergency medical consultations and first aid related to heat illnesses.
