[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] Following the easing of COVID-19 quarantine measures and the lifting of social distancing, 9 out of 10 office workers are planning summer vacations for the first summer holiday season.
On the 6th, Eugene Group announced that it recently conducted a survey on summer vacation plans targeting 1,119 employees from its affiliates including Eugene Corporation, Eugene Investment & Securities, Dongyang, Eugene Home Center, Eugene Hanil Fibers, and Eugene Logistics.
When asked about their summer vacation plans this year, 90.6% of employees responded that they 'have plans,' which is a 16.0 percentage point increase compared to 74.6% in the same period last year.
With the increase in summer vacation plans, vacation expenses are also expected to rise. The average expected summer vacation cost this year was 1.24 million KRW, about 19.2% higher than the 1.04 million KRW reported in last year's survey.
The increase in vacation plans and expenses is attributed to the return to normal life following the lifting of social distancing measures in April due to the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.
Regarding where they plan to spend their vacation, 'domestic travel (58.4%)' was the most common, followed by 'hotel staycation (13.2%)', 'nearby outings (7.1%)', and 'overseas travel (4.5%)'. Notably, domestic travel increased by 22.1 percentage points compared to last year's response rate of 36.3%.
When asked about the total number of vacation days, the largest group answered '3 days or less (33.0%)'. This was followed by 5 days (25.7%), 4 days (18.5%), 7 days or more (9.5%), and 6 days (3.0%), consistent with last year's results. Regarding vacation schedules, the first week of August (19.5%), the last week of July (13.3%), just after Liberation Day (11.5%), and just before Liberation Day (10.8%) were similar to last year.
