MZ Generation Police Officers: "Key Positions Based on Connections Rather Than Performance... No Future"
Negative Opinions on Internal Personnel and Communication Methods
No Objective Criteria for Police Assignment Management... Fairness Must Be Ensured
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] MZ generation (born early 1980s to early 2000s) police officers expressed negative opinions regarding personnel and communication within the organization.
According to the Police University Institute of Security Policy on the 3rd, the institute recently published a report titled 'Individual and Organizational Characteristics of Korean Police,' based on a survey of 1,131 police officers in their 6th year of service. Most ranks were constable (24.0%) and corporal (74.0%), and the age groups were mainly in their 20s (46.3%) and 30s (53.0%).
The new police officers viewed personnel management as unfair. For the item "Important positions within the police organization depend on personal connections rather than job performance," 49.4% answered "Yes," while only 14.9% answered "No." Additionally, 36.2% of respondents said "The future of the organization is not hopeful."
Regarding the question "The current innovation plans promoted within the organization do not seem likely to produce good results," 37.6% answered "Yes," and 17.2% answered "No." For the statements "Subordinates should not oppose decisions made by superiors" and "Subordinates should not be involved in policy and decision-making within the organization," 75.0% and 75.4% respectively disagreed.
The research team pointed out, "It is necessary to closely examine which aspects young police officers perceive cynicism in," and added, "There should be official opportunities to communicate with the younger generation of personnel and to consider unfair directives."

They continued, "Currently, police personnel management lacks objective standards and is mainly influenced by the subjective evaluations of personnel authorities or raters, personal relationships, and intimacy," advising, "To ensure fairness, shortcomings in the personnel assignment system must be checked."
