[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) has newly decorated the Jungnang Happiness Bulletin Board displayed on the outer wall of the district office for the summer edition.
The winning summer phrase is by resident Jang Sun-young: "In the rose garden's flower shade, even when hot winds blow, a baby sleeps in a butterfly pose fanned by grandmother."
In the phrase contest held last May, 132 residents participated, and one winner and five runners-up were selected. Each awardee received a certificate and a prize money.
The winning phrase will be displayed on the outer wall of the district office until early September. The runners-up phrases will be posted on the multimedia screen at Myeonmok Station Plaza for residents passing through the station to enjoy.
Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, "We thank everyone who participated in the phrase contest," and added, "We hope residents passing by the district office can imagine the selected phrase in their minds and smile for a moment."
Jongno-gu is launching the "Urban Gallery Exhibition Project," which combines the local representative sewing industry and traditional culture, starting in July, and is recruiting resident artists to participate.
Under the theme "Piecing Together Hope," this project draws inspiration from the sewing industry representing Changsin-dong. Noting that as much fabric is discarded as is used, the project aims to find value in discarded scraps by creating works that prevent waste accumulation from each finished product.
In particular, in connection with the upcoming "Jongno Hanbok Festival" this fall, the project plans to create handcrafted and woodworking pieces based on traditional fabrics and traditional styles to promote the charm and beauty of traditional culture.
Project 1 centers on collecting discarded fabrics from the sewing street in Changsin-dong to create "Yeouiju Munbo" (photo). Using traditional hanbok fabric Hangra, it is expected to transform waste fabric into a single piece of art.
Project 2, which simplifies the shape of a four-sided lantern into a circular "wooden lantern," is also noteworthy. The fabric inside is silver thread used in summer hanbok, on which resident artists will paint, write, and decorate with discarded fabric scraps to complete a unique, one-of-a-kind lantern.
Participants must be adults residing in Seoul, with priority given to Jongno-gu residents and Changsin-dong locals. Participation is free. Multiple applications are allowed. For more details, refer to the Jongno Cultural Foundation blog or contact the Changsin Communication Workshop.
The work will be held in the multipurpose room on the 2nd floor of the Changsin Communication Workshop from July 9 to August 7, with handicrafts every Saturday and woodworking every Sunday. The exhibition following the project will be held at the Jongno Urban Gallery (Heunginjimun) from August 17 to September 5.
Changsin-Sungin area in Jongno-gu, a strong supporter of Seoul's fashion industry and a cradle of Korea's representative sewing industry, still has skilled artisans with craftsmanship actively working. Accordingly, Jongno-gu continuously plans and presents programs such as "Making My Own Clothes" with sewing masters who have over 30 years of experience, highlighting local characteristics.
An official from the district said, "This meaningful project breathes new life into discarded fabric scraps to create beautiful traditional cultural works and allows participation in exhibitions," and added, "We hope many interested people will participate."
