Chinese Arrested for Making African Children Sing "I Am a Black-Skinned Monster... Low Intelligence" Song
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] A Chinese man who ran a video letter business in Africa and made children sing Chinese songs that racially demeaned themselves has been arrested by local judicial authorities.
According to foreign media reports, on the 20th (local time), the Malawi police in Africa arrested a Chinese man wanted on charges of racism and child exploitation.
The man named Luke was accused of producing racist videos using local children in the Enjewa area of Lilongwe, Malawi, in late 2020. In the videos he filmed, children appear singing and dancing in front of a blackboard with Chinese characters that read, "I am a black-skinned monster and have low intelligence." The children, unaware of the meaning of the phrases written on the blackboard, repeated them while waving their hands. Luke also produced videos in which children were made to chant slogans mocking poverty or praising Chinese people.
Luke is known to have exploited children by producing commissioned videos for money in the so-called "video letter business." He stated that he made the videos to widely promote Chinese culture in the local community.

Nancy Tembo, Malawi's Minister of Foreign Affairs, raised the issue, calling it a "disgusting and rude insult." Sylvester Namiwa, director of Malawi's Committee for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI), demanded a public apology from the Chinese Embassy and the repatriation of Luke to Malawi. In response, the Chinese Embassy in Malawi issued a statement on the 16th saying, "We strongly oppose racism. One incident committed by a foolish person does not represent the whole of China."
