This project, titled "Optimization and Demonstration of Hybrid Carbon Dioxide Capture and Liquefaction Process for Blue Hydrogen Production," has a total research budget of 33.5 billion KRW (government-supported development cost of 19.5 billion KRW). Hyundai Engineering & Construction will develop a process to capture and utilize low-energy carbon dioxide with a recovery rate of 90% and purity above 95%, producing more than 100 tons daily.
Ultimately, the goal is to internalize the technology by conducting on-site demonstration in the Pyeongtaek Hydrogen Specialized Zone, followed by designing a commercial-scale process capable of producing 1 million tons annually. The total research period is 33 months.
This national project involves 12 organizations jointly, including Hyundai Engineering & Construction as the overall lead, Hyundai Motor Company, Lotte Chemical, Korea Institute of Energy Technology, Clear Environment Industry, Ido, and Korea Special Gas. Hyundai Motor is responsible for environmental verification of blue hydrogen, hydrogen production, carbon dioxide capture, and economic feasibility analysis, while Lotte Chemical is in charge of developing membrane separation capture technology.
After developing the technology, it plans to expand its application through technology transfer to large-scale blue hydrogen production plants with significant carbon dioxide emissions, medium and small-scale incinerators, petrochemical plants, and others. Additionally, the captured carbon dioxide will undergo liquefaction processes to be directly used as liquefied carbon dioxide or sold as special gases after high-purity refining. Furthermore, through chemical conversion, it will be utilized for synthetic fuel and chemical product production, establishing close cooperative relationships with related organizations.
