Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to Operate 'Hanok Specialist Training Project' Starting July
Myongji University, Chonnam National University, Jeonbuk National University, and Hanok Culture Center Selected as Educational Institutions
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Min-young] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 9th that it has selected four dedicated educational institutions for Hanok design and construction to lead the popularization of Hanok and train experts through the 2022 'Hanok Professional Workforce Development Project.'
For the Hanok design course, three universities?Myongji University, Chonnam National University, and Jeonbuk National University?and for the Hanok construction manager course, the Hanok Culture Center will select trainees and operate educational programs in Hanok design and construction fields starting from July.
The Hanok Professional Workforce Development Project has produced about 130 graduates annually since 2019 to provide systematic and specialized education on Hanok, and this year aims to train 160 individuals.
A total of 480 million KRW in educational expenses will be supported for each educational institution, and trainees only need to cover a nominal amount for textbooks, field trip fees, and other incidental expenses. Since 2019, the Hanok design specialized course has added advanced courses such as complex Hanok design and Hanok equipment, repair, and maintenance, in addition to the basic introductory course to cultivate fundamental practical skills on site, aiming to improve the level of Hanok design.
The Hanok construction manager course plans to provide education to cultivate overall management capabilities required at Hanok construction sites, including carpentry, material construction practice, process planning, quality, and defect management. In particular, it plans to lead the dissemination and promotion of new technologies by reflecting the achievements of the Hanok research and development (R&D) project in the curriculum and conducting field trips to demonstration Hanok sites.
The selection of trainees will be announced this month according to each institution’s schedule, and the educational programs will be implemented from July. The courses will be organized considering the target audience and characteristics of each institution, and will include diverse and practical content such as online theoretical lectures, field training, and site visits, along with expert special lectures and regional volunteer programs. The target trainees will be architects, employees of architectural offices, and technicians in the architectural field, selected according to each institution’s trainee selection criteria.

Um Jeong-hee, Director of Architectural Policy at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, "We expect that many professionals who will lead Hanok culture will be produced through this project," adding, "We plan to continuously nurture excellent Hanok professionals so that Hanok can establish itself as an alternative for future architecture, such as reducing carbon emissions from buildings and creating new residential cultures."
