[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunji Kwon] The June 1 local elections have drawn attention as an extension of the presidential election, a showdown between so-called ‘Yunsim (Yoon Seok-yeol’s intention)’ and ‘Myeongsim (Lee Jae-myung’s intention). On the decisive day, the focus is on which way the public sentiment will tilt. Depending on the outcome, not only the fate of each party but also the political standing of President Yoon Seok-yeol and Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party’s General Election Committee Chairman (and former presidential candidate), is expected to change significantly.
The most watched area is undoubtedly Gyeonggi Province. Kim Eun-hye, the People Power Party candidate running for governor of Gyeonggi Province, served as the public relations director during Yoon’s presidential candidacy and as spokesperson for the president-elect, making her a representative figure of ‘Yunsim.’ During her campaign, Kim emphasized the one-team connection with President Yoon by saying, “If Kim Eun-hye does it, the Yoon Seok-yeol government does it,” and the People Power Party also promoted her as the top ‘Yunhaekgwan’ (core figure close to Yoon Seok-yeol), with Kim Ki-hyun, co-chairman of the joint election committee, calling her the highest Yunhaekgwan on May 31, intensifying the ‘Yunsim’ marketing.
Kim Dong-yeon, the Democratic Party candidate running against Kim Eun-hye, is regarded as a representative of ‘Myeongsim.’ During the last presidential election, Kim Dong-yeon unified with Chairman Lee, positioning himself as a political ally. During the campaign, he also pledged to carry on Chairman Lee’s basic income policies, such as youth basic income and senior basic income.
For both President Yoon and Chairman Lee, victory in this proxy battle is crucial. This local election is likely to be a significant opportunity to expand their political influence. President Yoon may use it as a solution to overcome the severe minority government situation, while Chairman Lee is likely to leverage it as a stepping stone to gain an advantageous position in the party primary and the next presidential election.

In Chungcheong, considered a casting voter region, there is keen interest in how much ‘Yunsim’ will influence the outcome.
