Kim Gun, Head of the Korean Peninsula Peace Negotiation Headquarters, Entrusted with the Crucial Task of Resolving North Korean Nuclear Issue
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] Kim Gun, the Ambassador to the United Kingdom appointed as the Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Korea Peace Negotiation Headquarters, will serve as our government's chief representative for North Korea's nuclear issues.
He will undertake the crucial task of seeking ways to respond to the advancement of North Korea's nuclear and missile programs alongside key North Korea nuclear representatives from surrounding countries, including Sung Kim, the U.S. Special Representative for North Korea.
Kim, the newly appointed head, is regarded as a veteran diplomat well-versed in North Korea nuclear issues. After passing the 23rd Foreign Service Examination, he served as the head of the North Korea nuclear negotiation division in 2007 and was the deputy chief representative for North Korea nuclear talks, equivalent to the head of the North Korea Nuclear Diplomacy Planning Division (director-level), during the Park Geun-hye administration from 2015 to 2016.
In 2010, during the Lee Myung-bak administration, he was dispatched to work at the Presidential Office's Foreign Affairs and Security Secretariat.
He has experience working as a secretary at both the U.S. and Chinese embassies and served as a counselor in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' North American Affairs Bureau, gaining experience related to key countries involved in North Korea nuclear diplomacy, such as the United States and China.
He served as Consul General in Vancouver, International Security Ambassador and Special Advisor to the Minister, and Deputy Minister before being appointed Ambassador to the United Kingdom last year.
He is also praised for his gentle personality and excellent political acumen. While serving as Deputy Minister, he took the lead in planning the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' new media promotions. In October last year, when presenting his credentials to Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom via video call, he attracted attention by wearing traditional Korean attire, including a durumagi (overcoat) and gat (traditional hat), thereby promoting Korean culture.
