Radiation Safety of Agricultural and Marine Products at Garak and Gangseo Wholesale Markets
No 'Non-compliance' Found in 32,950 Radiation Rapid Tests from 2013 to 2021... Radiation Testing and Result Disclosure on Website Expanded to Retail Market (Garak Mall) from 2021
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] The Seoul Agro-Fisheries & Food Corporation (President Youngpyo Moon) plans to continue radiation testing this year to dispel citizens' concerns about radioactive contamination.
Since wholesale markets are a key distribution channel supplying large quantities of agricultural and marine products to citizens, ensuring food safety is of utmost importance. Following the Fukushima nuclear power plant radiation leak accident, concerns about radioactive contamination of agricultural and marine products have increased, and the corporation has been conducting simple radiation tests since 2013.
Currently, radiation testing at the import stage is conducted by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, and radiation testing during distribution is carried out by the Seoul Institute of Health and Environment. By adding additional radiation tests conducted by the corporation, multiple layers of safety measures are secured to ensure the safety of citizens' food.
Since last year, the corporation has been publishing radiation test results on its website so that any citizen can check them, and the Seoul Metropolitan Government also discloses detailed radiation test results for high-consumption foods such as those in wholesale markets and marts through the Seoul Food Safety Information website.

Seungro Kim, head of the Distribution Development Team, stated, “From 2013 to 2021, a total of 32,950 simple radiation tests on agricultural and marine products were conducted, and no non-compliant products were found. We will continue to conduct thorough radiation tests this year to ensure that citizens can purchase agricultural and marine products with confidence.”
