"Erectile Dysfunction Medication Effective in Blood Sugar Control for Diabetes Patients"
Myongji Hospital Professor Kim Secheol's Research Team
After 6 Months of Low-Dose Tadalafil Administration
Reduction in HbA1c and Improvement in Fasting Blood Glucose
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] A domestic research team has found that erectile dysfunction medication is also effective in controlling blood sugar in diabetic patients.
The research team led by Professor Kim Se-chul of the Department of Urology at Myongji Hospital announced on the 12th that they published research results in an SCIE-level international journal showing that taking a low dose (5 mg) of the erectile dysfunction drug 'Tadalafil' daily is effective in blood sugar control.
Chronic hyperglycemia caused by insufficient insulin secretion or functional defects, which are characteristics of diabetes, is a common cause of erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction occurs in 39% of diabetic patients, and 14% of patients with erectile dysfunction are known to have diabetes.
The research team administered 5 mg of Tadalafil daily to 45 out of 68 male patients aged 35 to 75 with a history of type 2 diabetes and erectile dysfunction, and gave a placebo to the remaining 23 control group members using a double-blind method for six months, then measured glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c).
As a result, there was a significant difference in glycated hemoglobin between the two groups (p<0.021). After six months, the HbA1c reduction rate was 0.137% in the Tadalafil group, while the control group showed a 0.196% increase. Fasting blood glucose also decreased by 6.4 mg/dL in the Tadalafil group, showing an improvement in blood sugar levels.
Professor Kim said, "We have proven that long-term use of low-dose Tadalafil, an erectile dysfunction treatment, is effective in blood sugar control and improvement of erectile function in patients with type 2 diabetes and erectile dysfunction," adding, "The Myongji Hospital research team will continue to expand and observe studies with more patients to address diabetes and sexual dysfunction."
