Gyeongbuk Province Leads Nationwide Effort to Develop Korea Native Cattle AI Data Model First
Held Kick-off Meeting for Cattle AI Training Data Construction and AI Model Development
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] On the 11th, Gyeongbuk Province held a kickoff meeting for the project "Construction of AI Training Data for Cattle and Development of AI Models" at the Dongnakgwan Seminar Room in the provincial government office.
The kickoff meeting was attended by Lee Jung-woo, Gyeongbuk Province Metaverse Policy Officer, Nam Jin-hee, Director of the Livestock Technology Research Institute, and officials from the Livestock Products Quality Evaluation Institute.
The main contents include ▲ collecting Hanwoo nose pattern (biometric) image data (from over 500 heads) ▲ building AI training data by collecting images of Hanwoo embryos at various developmental stages (over 1,000) ▲ developing and validating AI models for recognizing Hanwoo biometric information and grading embryos.
Gyeongbuk has about 750,000 Hanwoo cattle and the largest number of households engaged in livestock farming nationwide.
Until now, the method of attaching ear tags for Hanwoo breeding management was prone to falling off easily, making traceability difficult, and there was no system to guarantee the history and quality of embryos, resulting in failures in fertilization.
The province plans to secure biometric recognition technology data through model development and improve traceability, disease management, and breeding management by utilizing the cow's nose pattern, which is like a human fingerprint, as well as guarantee the history and quality of embryos, and improve conception rates and breeding technology.
Lee Jung-woo, Gyeongbuk Province Metaverse Policy Officer, said, "It is significant as the nation's first project to build AI training data and develop models for Hanwoo biometric information and embryos," adding, "We will continue to actively discover cases of new technology utilization related to the regional economy."

Nam Jin-hee, Director of the Livestock Technology Research Institute, said, "This is a good example of applying new technologies that are practically needed in the livestock field," and added, "Through active collaboration, we will strive to propose various national projects such as supplementing the national livestock traceability system and introducing embryo grading systems."
