Czech Republic Replaces Russia at UN Human Rights Council
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The Czech Republic has agreed to take the seat on the UN Human Rights Council previously held by Russia. Russia, which invaded Ukraine, was expelled from the Human Rights Council last month.
According to foreign media on the 10th (local time), the UN General Assembly elected the Czech Republic, the sole candidate for the next Human Rights Council member, with 157 votes in favor.
Out of 193 member countries, 180 participated in the vote. The remaining 23 votes, excluding those in favor, were all abstentions.
The United States pushed for Russia's expulsion from the UN Human Rights Council after Russian forces massacred hundreds of civilians in Bucha, Ukraine.
On the 7th of last month, the UN passed a resolution to suspend Russia's membership in the Human Rights Council with 93 votes in favor, 24 against, and 58 abstentions.
