[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] POSCO Gwangyang Steelworks (Director Lee Jin-su) held a ‘Filial Love Sharing Day’ on the 4th at Kumho-dong Nanum School, providing a time to reflect on the meaning of filial piety for local senior citizens.
‘Filial Love Sharing Day’ is an event prepared by Gwangyang Steelworks to commemorate the upcoming Parents' Day, wishing that local senior citizens continue to live healthily and happily.
On this day, Gwangyang Steelworks invited senior citizens from the district to Nanum School, delivering 130 carnation flower baskets and 500 corsages filled with respect and gratitude. Along with these, filial piety kits consisting of summer items such as socks and handkerchiefs, as well as bread and fruit, were prepared to give the seniors a happier day.
Participants in the event included Lee Cheol-ho, Deputy Director of Gwangyang Steelworks, Choi Sook-ja, Director of Gwangyang City Resident Welfare Division, Jeong Byeong-gwan, Director of Gwangyang Jungma Senior Welfare Center, and heads of nine local senior welfare institutions. The Ma-eum-eum Flower Arrangement Volunteer Group also personally handed carnations to the seniors and checked on their well-being.
In particular, the carnation flower baskets and corsages were deeply meaningful as they were handmade by the Ma-eum-eum Flower Arrangement Volunteer Group.
The Gwangyang Steelworks Ma-eum-eum Flower Arrangement Volunteer Group (Leader Hong Jong-in) is a volunteer group established in 2017 to help improve the emotional well-being of elderly living alone in the area and to prevent solitary deaths, sharing warm companionship with seniors.
The members devoted great care to making the carnation flower baskets and corsages, even inviting professional instructors for training, to offer warm comfort to seniors experiencing depression and social isolation due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
Kim Wol-rye, an active member of the Ma-eum-eum Flower Arrangement Volunteer Group, said, “For the past month, volunteers have made each carnation petal with all their sincerity,” adding, “We hope that the fragrance of our hearts and dedication contained in the flower baskets will become a strength for the seniors to overcome the difficult times of COVID-19 and enjoy a happy May.”
The remaining carnation flower baskets, corsages, and filial piety kits will be delivered to the seniors through each senior welfare institution after the event.
In his commemorative speech, Deputy Director Lee Cheol-ho said, “I would like to express my gratitude to the employees who are actively volunteering in the community without expecting anything in return,” and added, “I hope that the warm hearts we express through these carnations will be well conveyed to the seniors.”
