Human Rights Commission: "Children Must Grow as Dignified Subjects in Love"
Name under Chairman Song Doohwan
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Jo] The National Human Rights Commission announced on the 4th that it will make efforts at the commission level to ensure that all children can grow harmoniously as dignified subjects of fundamental rights in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Children's Day.
On the same day, the Human Rights Commission issued a statement in the name of Chairman Song Doo-hwan, saying, "Children's Day is a meaningful day to remind us that children should be respected as independent individuals no different from adults." The commission emphasized, "In the text distributed by teacher Bang Jeong-hwan at the first Children's Day event, there was a request to use honorific language with children but always gently," adding, "Children should grow up in a family environment filled with happiness, love, and understanding."
The commission pointed out, "The happiness and quality of life felt by children and adolescents are at a concerning level," noting that "In 2021, Korea's Children and Youth Happiness Index ranked 22nd out of 22 OECD countries." It expressed particular concern that child abuse has been occurring frequently in various forms as the COVID-19 situation prolongs, and that sexual crime issues have not ceased even after the Nth Room incident.
