Jeonju-si, Ajung Lake Library Groundbreaking Ceremony
7.7 Billion Won Invested... Lakeside Library Built with the Longest Domestic Length of 101m
[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Jeonju City announced on the 19th that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Ajung Lake Library at Ajung Lake No.1 Square.
The Ajung Lake Library is a specialized library that Jeonju City has been developing since 2020.
By October this year, a total project cost of 7.7 billion KRW, including 2.8 billion KRW in national funds, will be invested. The Ajung Lake Library, with a total floor area of 902㎡ on the first floor above ground and a length of 101 meters, is the longest lakeside library in Korea using wood.
The exterior of the library was designed with curves so that the surface of Ajung Lake and the Girinbong ridge naturally connect. As a specialized library themed on nature and ecology, materials such as wood and other eco-friendly elements are used.
Inside, there will be spaces where visitors can read and relax while looking out at the lakeside through large front windows, as well as spaces to enjoy art while listening to music such as piano performances.
Jeonju City has committed to making the library convenient for all citizens and tourists by providing facilities such as nursing rooms and restrooms for the disabled, ensuring no inconvenience in use.
In addition, regarding the construction of Ajung Lake Library, Jeonju decided to close the sharp curve section of Ajung Lake Road, which has long been a problem for the safe passage of nearby residents and library users. Instead, an ecological tunnel will be constructed inside this section while straightening the road simultaneously.
Once the Ajung Lake Library is completed, the city expects the Ajung Lake area, along with surrounding spaces such as the former Hodonggol nursery and the nature ecology experience center, to be greatly loved by citizens and tourists.
Kim Seung-su, mayor of Jeonju, said, “Since declaring the vision of ‘a city where books become life,’ various specialized libraries have been established throughout Jeonju. When the Ajung Lake Library, the most ecological and beautiful library embodying life, healing, and nature against the backdrop of Ajung Lake, is completed, it will become a representative landmark satisfying both citizens and travelers.”
