National Security Office: "Emerging and Core Technologies Must Expand Cooperation with Leading Technology Countries"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] On the 31st, the National Security Office stated that in order to secure emerging and core technologies, cooperation with technology-leading countries should be expanded, mentioning QUAD and AUKUS.
The National Security Office made this statement in the report titled "Emerging and Core Technologies and National Security Strategic Tasks," presented to the Standing Committee of the National Security Council (NSC) on the same day.
Emerging and core technologies are fundamentally new and innovative technologies that can have a profound impact on national security, society, and the economy, requiring national efforts for research, development, and protection. Representative examples include 5G, 6G, artificial intelligence, and quantum technologies.
The report proposed four major tasks to strengthen a technology-leading research system and capabilities, moving away from the existing technology-following research and support methods: ▲ early warning and discovery of emerging and core technologies ▲ establishment of dedicated specialized institutions ▲ strengthening protection systems for technology and related personnel ▲ enhancing international cooperation.
Regarding the enhancement of international cooperation, the report mentioned QUAD and AUKUS centered on the United States, the U.S.-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC), the EU's "Horizon Europe," and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), stating, "Fundamentally, cooperation should be expanded and deepened with technology-leading countries that share values, possess technological capabilities, and have the willingness to use technology responsibly."
