Establishment of the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam Metropolitan Express Railway ... Busan City and Korea Railroad Research Institute Sign Business Agreement
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] On the 29th at 4 p.m., Busan City will sign a business agreement with the Korea Railroad Research Institute at BEXCO to establish a future innovation metropolitan transportation system in the Southeast region.
The signing ceremony will be attended by Park Hyung-joon, Mayor of Busan, and Han Seok-yoon, President of the Korea Railroad Research Institute.
The agreement will promise active cooperation and mutual support for technology research and development to build the future innovation metropolitan transportation system in the Southeast region.
The two organizations will mutually cooperate in areas such as ▲promoting technology research and development for the introduction of next-generation transportation systems ▲advancing the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam (Bu-Ul-Gyeong) Mega City metropolitan express railroad (GTX) ▲information exchange and support for mutual industry-academia-research exchange for railroad and logistics technology development ▲collaboration on technology development of new urban railroad construction methods and field application.
Through this business agreement, Busan City plans to actively cooperate with the Korea Railroad Research Institute to promote the ongoing ‘Pre-feasibility Study for the Introduction of Urban-type Ultra-high-speed Transportation Infrastructure.’
They also plan to jointly review the next-generation metropolitan express vehicle system for the ‘Southeast New Transportation Means Research Project,’ which is scheduled to be commissioned this year with secured national funding.
With technical cooperation from the Korea Railroad Research Institute, Busan City aims to introduce various next-generation railroad systems such as AI-based autonomous train systems, hydrogen-powered trains, and magnetic levitation trains into the Southeast future innovation metropolitan transportation system, thereby leading in future innovation technologies.
President Han Seok-yoon stated, “We will realize the ‘K-luxury’ of railroad and logistics technology through technology cooperation and practical application of developed technologies,” adding, “We will strive to expand the premium ‘K-railroad technology’ from Busan to other metropolitan areas.”
Mayor Park Hyung-joon said, “I hope this agreement will serve as an opportunity for Busan City and the Korea Railroad Research Institute, a specialized research institution for railroad and public transportation systems, to mutually cooperate in establishing the Southeast future innovation metropolitan transportation system.”

Regarding the necessity of the Southeast future innovation metropolitan transportation system, Mayor Park emphasized, “The system, which shortens travel time between major infrastructures to around 20 minutes, will greatly aid in enhancing accessibility to Gadeok New Airport and attracting the 2030 Busan World Expo, and its economic and social ripple effects will be significant.”
