[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Gyeongsangbuk-do is actively responding by maximizing the operation of local cremation facilities as the demand for cremation has increased recently due to seasonal factors during the changing seasons and the rise in COVID-19 deaths in the region and Daegu.
Gyeongbuk Province’s “Case of Establishing a Joint Response System Sharing Cremation Demand with Daegu City” was introduced as a model case for local governments nationwide at the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters meeting on the 22nd.
Currently, there are 12 locations with 30 cremators operating in the region, and the operation frequency per cremator, which was normally 2 to 4 times, has been expanded to more than 5 times per unit, increasing the daily average from 120 to 146 cases.
Additionally, by actively accommodating cremation demand from outside the region, including Daegu City, the ratio of local and external cremations at regional cremation facilities accounts for 50% each.
To respond to the surge in cremation demand in the Gyeongbuk and Daegu areas, Gyeongbuk Province is ▲ increasing the number of operating sessions at local cremation facilities, ▲ actively accepting external cremation demand, and ▲ providing cremation support funds (for Gimcheon, Sangju, Uljin, and Daegu).
They also urgently requested personnel dispatch and refrigerated storage support from the central government, allowed temporary exceptions for cremation facility workers to work more than 52 hours per week, and established a maintenance and repair system for cremators.

Governor Lee Cheol-woo stated, “We will enhance the operation rate of cremation facilities by establishing a hotline with Daegu City so that city and provincial residents can conduct funerals with peace of mind,” and urged, “We ask city and provincial residents to refrain from cremating exhumed remains for the time being.”
