42.7% of Deaths Counted 3 Days After Death Confirmation
On the 16th, as the number of deaths continues to record the highest ever amid the surge of COVID-19 cases, the Ministry of Health and Welfare announced that it will operate 60 cremation facilities nationwide intensively until mid-April. Through this, the average daily operation per existing cremator, which was 3.3 times (1,044 cases), will be increased to at least 5 times, and up to 7 times in the metropolitan area and large cities, enabling the cremation of 1,580 people per day. According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH) on the 22nd, among the 1,835 COVID-19 deaths reported from the 11th to the 17th, 647 cases, or 35.3%, were deaths that occurred in nursing hospitals and care facilities.
The number of deaths in medical institutions other than nursing hospitals and facilities was 62.5% (1,147), and deaths at home or during transport accounted for 2.2% (41).
The time from death determination to being recorded as a 'COVID-19 related death' also varied. Among the 1,835 deaths during this period, 1,050 (57.2%) were classified as deaths within three days of the reporting date, which was the highest, but 42.7% (785) were recorded more than three days after death determination. Deaths recorded between three days and one week after the reporting date numbered 637 (34.7%), and those recorded after more than two weeks were 148 (8.0%).

The majority of deaths were among confirmed cases aged 60 and older. According to CDCH data, among the 1,957 COVID-19 deaths in the third week of March (13th to 19th), ▲ those in their 80s accounted for 62.9% (1,232), ▲ those in their 70s 21.1% (413), and ▲ those in their 60s 10.3% (201), with those aged 60 and above making up 94.3% (1,846) of the total.
